Work it

Hey ladies,

I cannot tell you how much it comforts me to hear Beth and Shefali remind us NOT to overtrain and injur ourselves. And with that, I'm also committing to some better nutrition for the next 36 weeks. Yes, while my body does love ice cream (and I will continue to give it some), we are going to be putting our muscles through quite a bit of exhaustion and I want to make sure they can bounce back for more...so here I proclaim an attempt at eating healthy.

Stay tuned for success or failure updates. :)

And Shef- thanks for the training plan! I will look at that today! I started the trifuel one this morning and did a 50 min. bike ride - not hard, but 95-105 rpm and it was kind of nice to focus on keeping my heartrate in a certain zone instead of the mileage or intensity. I had to do swap Monday and Tuesday's workouts this week because of after school crap going on/holiday get-togethers.

But here's my question - all of the tri plans I've read mention the "small chainring" on your bike. I don't know what that means. Is that like an easy gear?

And Shef - how do you access that training log on the site you sent? Lastly -adorable picture of you sleeping...but you let your dogs sleep on you like that?! Don't they stink?!

Much love to you all and hope the short week treats you well!

my snuggle buddies

Thats why I can't wake up for swim practice...

Tomorrow and the start of 36 weeks to LOUISVILLE

Hello ladies,
Tomorrow is a big day for me. I have to finally get off my butt and start getting back into routine if I want to be able to finish this beast. Boo, thanks for the email from the finisher. It scared me so much that I finally went to swim practice last week and rejoined the masters team. 6am is much earlier than i remember it to be!!!

Being in the profession that I am in I had to make a post today. I have seen so many people put everything they have into training for a beast like this and end up with an injury. You guys have been varsity athletes and know your body pretty well, however come july when we are putting 100 miles in on a saturday and trying to run after you just have to HAVE to be smart. Just go with your body and how you feel.
For that reason I think everyone should keep a log. Beginner triathlete.com has a great one for free, if you find anything else, use it. Its amazing how you can see a trend in things like soreness, sleep and fatigue pretty fast. Just remember to train smart. Which brings me to the plan we are starting. I absolutely detest garbage yardage. I like to go hard and go home and have some quality workouts unlike this one. I have talked a lot with the Duke Triathlon coach who's mantra is 4 quality workouts a week- brick (bike indoor/run) on tuesday, track work on thursday, hard bike on saturday (long), and long run sunday. He says rest or core work monday and swim wed and fri all easy recovery. I like this strategy because then you are getting something out of the workout each time.
For christmas I have asked for a mark fritzferald plan for this ironman. Its 24 weeks so I will use the trifuel one till then (or maybe the 1/2 fitzgerald plan I have). As soon as I get the plan I will let you guys know and we can go from there... It goes with the belief of training smart and having quality workouts.
I will email you the 1/2 plan so you can look at it and see what you think...I know we are all busy with lots of other things going on in our lives and quality workouts appeal to all of us.
Anyways I'll get off my pedestal and send you the email-
Train hard but train smart
Shef
p.s. I am not NOT doing anything on christmas or new years day other than eat...

Hot Tips from a survivor...

Hey guys!

So funny story...I was drunk on Saturday night. Catherine can attest to this as she was texting something funny about drinking 3 steins in her running clothes and at one point I wrote back, "haha, I go now." Ahh, beer...and goldschlager - GROSS ME OUT. Don't do it. I can still feel the gold in my stomach.
Anyway - the point of this story is that I was out with a group of friends/friends of friends and one of my good friends, Kari Schuster, wants to do the Vegas marathon next December and she was saying, "Oh come on jillboo, you'll be done with the beast and can just do it!" Then one of her friends says, "wait, what beast?!" A little explanation and suddenly her eyes lit up - her colleague just did the Louisville ironman this past year! So she said she'd email me her email address. Sure enough...I got her address on Monday. So yesterday I got up enough guts to do a cold-call-email and introduce myself and try and give her some insight as to why I'm stalking her (aka - scared out of my mind). She was SUPER nice and wrote me back this long email ALL about it. Of course, that just sparked a million more questions in my mind about the race so I think after the holidays I definitely will meet up with her and bring a notepad. But she wrote a lot so I'll put the whole thing in here. Some of it is specific to Louisville and other parts are just good to see some of her strategy. AND BETH - she did Madison the year before! So without further ado... notes from Val:

Well...turns out I can't copy and paste in here. That was anticlimatic. I'll have to just forward the email.

Which leaves me a bit more room to answer Beth's last question...life outside of training! (There still is one at this point!)
Not too much is new, but life is juts crazy with the holidays and trying to get to the holiday parties, host a couple, make batches of cookies and food galore, shop (ICK), wrap christmas presents, decorate the house, etc. etc. Jake and I cut down our tree and I absolutely LOVE it! I don't want to take it down...I think it should be a permanent decoration in our house. I signed up to take a community ed Spanish class this winter so we'll see what I can pick up there. ANNNDDD...that's it? No buying puppies, no having babies...I'm just plain 'ol boring. What about the rest of you? Beth - how's Colorado been treating you this winter? Have you been out skiing yet? And C. Eastman - what's shaking out in Portland? Have you found a lover? :) Shefali, my dear Indian friend, I miss you...how's Bryan? Work? Are you still swimming with Natajsa? How is she doing?

Miss you guys and I'll forward you that email right now! I read it twice yesterday...some parts get me pumped up and other parts scare me. Oh and one word about this girl - she loves God.

I'd have to agree, Boo. Can't really afford another race at this point. If they weren't so dang expensive! But, I agree on everyone doing a half that weekend. At least we can all be thinking of each other during times of pain.

Another tip that I have learned from numerous people around here is...the most common mistake for first time ironmaners is over training. Although there will be a lot of training involved, sticking to a plan and making sure to rest is important...so we all don't get injured or burnt out. So that's some good news, right??? :)

It was a high of 4 degrees here the past few days and has been miserable! So no outside training for me.

How's everyone's lives outside of training?

Half me

Shef and Co.,

Thanks for the info and extra motivation to get me to the gym tonight...despite the blizzard outside! And while heading out to North Carolina sounds GLORIOUS, I really can't afford another trip OR registration for a half. BUT I agree that it'd be great for training - especially with nutrition and mental toughness. (112 miles on bike! WTF?!) SOooOOoo, perhaps we should all do a half that weekend? Not for racing, but for the training - you can race it, Shef! And figure out what hydration/food/whatever worked or sucked. I was telling Catherine how tired I was after a week of exercise (see attached image) and I really need to start feeling ENERGIZED with this "kick your ass" business.
So...advice?

Sunday, December 6, 2009

I was talking to a friend yesterday (who finished 5th at Kona in her age group) who advised that we do a half 8-10 weeks before the race to practice nutrition.
I am planning to do the white lake half the first week in May (see setupevents.com). Its about a one to two hour drive from durham and a LOVELY course (read flat). If you guys wanted to come over and do it you can stay with me ..just an option!
Im also planning to do a half marathon on March 21st which is down the road from where I live to get me moving... any company for that too will be much appreciated!!

alright thats all!!

Good work, Beth!

Alright - Yeakel is on board...now where the fonk is Catherine? I expected to see some nice pictures of your hot bod by now on this blog...tsk tsk.

And Beth - I do NOT have drop bars for my bike so THANK YOU for sharing that bit of advice...I suppose that's something one should practice with too, huh? :) And I'm looking for a new book to read so now I have one to look for...thank you!

I was getting nervous the other day about this (like most days) and especially thinking about the nutrition piece. I did NOT do a good job of eating/drinking on the 1/2 ironman and that ruined me. So I did some research good news - turns out we're going to burn about 7,000 calories on that day. HAHA! But that means a re-chid (:)) schedule of shoving calories in your mouth. Lots of food, drink, and practice doing it all so your stomach doesn't shut down on race day. I'll give more specifics later, but I need to correct some homework now.

Also - I think I sent you guys (beth and catherine) a link where you can just create a new posting...true story?

Miss you guys!
love,
jboo

Welcome

Well well well...

I still want to puke. We signed up for this and not a day goes by that I don't love AND hate this idea. So why not start a little online tribute the next 9 months of our training times.... My hope is you ladies will post hilarious pictures, share stories, maybe do some microsoft paint art (catherine?) and laugh at all the crazy things we're about to do. It's supposed to be FUN right?! Haha, yep...fun. I will post a pic of my flabby bod soon and then i'll rely on your motivation ("hey fatty, why don't you get on a damn bike?" to get me in shape.
